Daegu and Our Long Lost Family (part 2)

We unloaded our luggage and headed for the exit.  We arrived right as scheduled so we were a little early.  As I rounded the corner and headed for the exit doors, I caught a glimpse of my mother. Just a brief glance, one that made me do a double take.  Then I looked at the woman's hands and she held a Christmas card I sent out last year with my 3 children and the words "Peace" "Love" and "Joy" and I started to cry.

My sweet Aunt Jeong Su, Aunt In Su and cousin Jin Young were all there waiting for us.  They didn't know we would arrive a little early, and they had been waiting eagerly for our arrival.  We were the last off of our train.  I turned to look at Jean and we were both crying.  We embraced our family immediately and it was like we had known each other all our lives.  I cannot explain how Jean felt, but I know I felt so comfortable around them.  It was like we were filled with Peace, Love and Joy.

Our second cousin Yang Hi and her father walked up shortly afterwards and warm greetings were exchanged.  Jin Young was the only one who could converse with us in English, but that didn't matter.  We were family and we were together.

Jin Young drove us to our cousin's house where a banquet of foods were prepared by his wife, daughter and her best friend.   We found out on the ride over that the oldest Uncle, Il Su had passed away 1 month ago from heart problems.  Unfortunately, he was the one we wanted to talk to because he was only 1 year younger than our mother, but in due time, our questions would be answered and all was well.

We ate at Jong Myung's house (Yang Hee's dad and my cousin) and it was so delicious.  His wife and her best friend put so much time and effort into the meal.  It was a feast!  Our other Uncle Heagon was there at the house.  We were so excited to meet him too.

Feast for Breakfast

At first I was a little intimidated by my uncle and cousin because they were so quiet.  However, I think the language barrier had a lot to do with their silence.  My uncle has the same jaw structure as my mother's.

After lunch, our family took us to my mother's old homestead, a beautiful village about an hour from Daegu.  We were able to see my late Uncle Il Su's home and the burial mounds for my grandparents and uncle.  It was all quite emotional for me.  These are the pictures from Seong ju
